Major Project: Pan concept test

Using the drawings I had for Pan's forms I've 'tested' how they look alongside Lyra.

The Ermine from looks cute and with refinement I'd be happy to take it forward. The Bird form is nice but I feel it doesn't fit as well as the others. The cat form is a little too large but with refinement could look cute. The Moth form is simple but works well with the curls in Lyra's hair. Looking at these I feel the Ermine and Moth are two I would definitely want to take forward.

Major Project: Pans Form Sketches

Following previous sketches, I continued sketches on some of Pan's forms. Some like the Moth were easy to figure out, it will mostly need refining from here. Others like the Ermine may need more work. Otherwise I'm fairly happy to start the refining process in Photoshop and make any improvements to their designs.I also need to see how these fit in with Lyra so I will be adding them in with her too.

Major Project: Lyra Cleanup/Colours

Following choosing clothing for Lyra I have cleaned her up to help choose colours for her.

Here are the colour experiments I have done. Keeping in mind her tomboy nature and attitude, I don't believe 7 is a good fit. I personally quite like 5, 6 and 10 but any comment are welcome.

@Alan Major Project: Pan Initial shapes

Based off the shapes in Lyra's design I began some sketches for the forms that Lyra's daemon Pan takes. I feel at this point the moth is the most successful and forms such as the ermine may have to be more subtle. I quite like 11 as it is simple and relates to Lyra quite well.

@Alan Major Project: Lyra clothing

After cleaning Lyra up initially I've began designing clothes to fit with her personality. I've also experimented with colour here. In terms of the colours used, I looked at popular Victorian colours.

With the skin colour I quite like the one used for 3 and 8, and I believe a dirtier blonde such as the one in 7 or 9 suits Lyra's personality better.

In terms of the clothes I think 9 fits in best with Lyra, the clothes are masculine but the bow shows a piece of femininity. I feel 3, 6 and 7 could also work however 6 and 7 seem a bit too tidy.

Major Project: Quotes/Design info

Quotes referring to Lyra

'It might have been enough to make her cry, if she was the sort of girl who cried. Instead she gritted her teeth and moved the arm gently until it felt looser.'

'The Scholars had more important things to do than attend to the affections of a half-wild, half civilized girl, left among them by chance.'

'In many ways Lyra was a barbarian. What she liked best was clambering over the College roofs with Roger'

'She had passed her childhood, like a half-wild cat'

'There's a lot of goodness and sweetness in your nature, and a lot of determination'

'She looked fierce and stubborn as she sat there'

'a blonde little girl'

From these descriptions we can tell she's a small, blonde girl. Personality wise she is brave, determined and stubborn. She is more of a tomboy and rough around the edges.

Pantalaimon Forms

Moth (Dark Brown)
Ermine
Bat
Small Lion
Bird (Rook,Canary, Goldfinch)
Mouse
Wild-Cat
Firefly
Owl

These are the forms Lyras daemon takes in the book. It would be interesting to create 2-3 of these forms for Pan to switch between. Moth and Ermine appear often and I am leaning towards designing these.

Alethiometer (Golden Compass)

"It was very like a clock, or a compass, for there were hands pointing to places around the dial, but instead of the hours or the points of the compass there were several little pictures, each of them painted with the finest and slenderest sable brush."

Symbols include: Hourglass, Sun, Alpha and Omega, Marionette, Serpent, Cauldron, Anchor, Angel, Helmet, Beehive, Moon, Madonna, Apple, Bird, Bread, Ant, Bull, Candle, Cornucopia, Chameleon, Thunderbolt, Dolphin, Walled Garden, Globe, Sword, Griffin, Horse, Camel, Elephant, Crocodile, Baby, Compass, Lute, Tree, Wild Man, Owl

The compass has many symbols as part of it's design, however with such a small character this may be difficult to incorporate, I may choose a few in order to simplify it.

@Alan Major Project: Lyra Face and Hair

Using a previous body shape, I started designing Lyra's face and hair. The clothes here are a placeholder until I move onto this in more detail. Styles such as 3 wouldn't work as they are messy however 4 and 8 stand out as the most simple yet charming. I like 1 but I don't feel there is much charm to it. 4 is my personal favourite.

@Alan Major Project: Lyra body shapes/clothes

From the research done on Vinyl toys, I sketched out a couple of shapes.
Using these shapes, I've begun testing articles of clothing to decide which type of body shape would work best.
I really like 2, 4, 9 and 11 which suggests that the two rightmost in the "body examples" are the sets of rules closest to what I'd like to achieve. The next stage is to start bringing in facial features and hair however I'm not really sure how to begin implementing these.

Major Project: Vinyl Toy Reference

After speaking with Alan I decided to take a more simple approach to designing Lyra.

The world of Vinyl toys seems to portray more of the style of character I'd like to approach. Vinyl toys take characters and shrink them down to collectible toys or figures.

For example these are all the same character but shown in a vinyl toy forms.

I've looked at some Vinyl toys brands and the "rules" behind them.

Rock Candy

More on the realistic side, roughly 3 1/2 to 4 heads high. Items in proportion with the bodies.

Dorbz

Roughly 2 heads high, round head and rounded figure. Larger Head.

Pop Vinyl

Roughly 2 heads high. Large head, square head. Thinner bodies. Items about 1/4 height of character.

Mystery Minis

Roughly 3 heads high. Torso and legs each one head. Slightly oversized, round head. Large hands and Feet. Items a head high.

DieCast

Larger head, roughly 3 heads high. Exaggerated features. and large items.

BearBrick

Rounded oval heads. Roughly 3 heads high. "Claw" hands, rounded bodies and square feet.

Dudebox

Includes 3 different shapes based on the character.  They are roughly 2 heads high. Some have rounded heads, some oval and stretched and others incorporate their head with their bodies. They have a rounded shape.

Munny

This is a "make your own" vinyl. It is roughly 2 heads high with a large, rounded head and ears. The body is rounded with stubs for feet.

I will take these into account when designing Lyra, picking out and using these shapes.

Major Project: Reference

While looking into constructing a character I have also looked into the construction sheets Disney have made.

These are very useful in seeing the shapes that make up the Disney characters.

Alan has suggested looking into Victorian furniture to help shape Lyra as a character.

Using the curves in the furniture could help with my character design.
